What This Means
→ For a $48.50 bill, an 18% tip (good service) is $8.73. Total paid: $57.23.
→ If service was excellent, a 20% tip ($9.70) brings the total to $58.20.
→ If splitting between 2 people and each tipping on their share: each pays ~$28.62 for 18% tip per person.
→ Quick mental math: $48.50 ÷ 10 = $4.85 (10% tip). Add half ($2.43) for 15%, or round up to $8–9 for 18%.

Why Tipping Matters
Tipping is a way to recognize good service and supplementary income for service workers, particularly in the United States where many service workers rely heavily on tips to reach minimum wage. Understanding appropriate tipping amounts is both respectful and practical.
Tipping practices vary by country and industry, but this calculator focuses on US dining tipping, which is the most common use case.
Standard Tipping Guidelines in the US
Restaurant dining (standard):
- 15%: Adequate service
- 18%: Good service (common default)
- 20%: Excellent service
- 25%+: Outstanding service or special circumstances
Quick service (counter ordering, fast food):
- 10–15% (if paying by card): Optional but appreciated
- 0%: Acceptable (no table service)
Delivery drivers:
- $2–5 minimum + 15–20% of order
- More for longer distances, bad weather, or large orders
Bartenders:
- $1–2 per drink OR 15–20% of total bill
Rideshare drivers:
- $1–2 minimum + 10–20% of fare (varies)
Hotel housekeeping:
- $2–5 per night (leave on nightstand)
Other services (hair salons, spas, etc.):
- 15–20% of service cost
How to Calculate Tips Quickly
15% tip: Calculate 10% (move decimal left), then add half that amount.
- Bill: $40 → 10% = $4 → 15% = $4 + $2 = $6
20% tip: Calculate 10% and double it.
- Bill: $40 → 10% = $4 → 20% = $8
18% tip: Calculate 10%, add half again, add a bit more.
- Bill: $40 → 10% = $4 → 18% ≈ $7.20
Factors Affecting Tip Amount
Service quality: Attentive, friendly service deserves 20%. Slow or rude service might justify 15% or less.
Dining complexity: Fine dining with complex service justifies higher tips. Casual counter service justifies lower tips.
Problem resolution: If service failed but the server fixed it, tip well. They're trying.
Group size: Some restaurants add automatic gratuity (18–20%) for large groups. Check your bill.
Pre-tax vs post-tax: Most people tip on the pre-tax subtotal, though tipping on post-tax total is also acceptable.
Buffet service: 10–15% is typical (less service provided).
Regional and Cultural Variations
Tipping norms vary significantly:
- Some countries (European, some Asian): Tipping is rare or offensive
- Others: Service charges are added automatically, making additional tipping optional
- US practice: Tipping is expected and integral to many workers' income
When traveling internationally, research local tipping customs to avoid unintended offense or underpayment.
Tip Etiquette
Cash tips: Leave directly on the table or in the folder with your credit card slip. Not leaving a cash tip when paying with credit is acceptable if a gratuity was added to the card charge.
Card tips: Add the tip to your card when the server presents it or when prompted at a register.
No-tip situations: Drive-through and pickup orders aren't tipping-required, though options exist.
Group dining: If splitting a bill, tip on your individual portion, not the total.
Frequently Asked Questions
Most people tip on the pre-tax subtotal, which is socially standard. However, tipping on the post-tax total is also acceptable. Use whichever method you prefer—servers understand both.
